The Bavarian Brewers Federation (Bayerischer Brauerbund)

The Bavarian Brewers Federation is the proud trade association of the more than 600 Bavarian breweries that have inherited this incomparable brewing tradition. Please visit our English website at http://www.bavarianbeer.com.

Bavarian Beer is unique in the world. There simply is no other beverage quite like it! Bavaria — the southern-most state of the German Federal Republic, nestled in the foothills of the Alps — is the place with the greatest variety of beer styles and the longest uninterrupted brewing tradition ... anywhere in the world! The oldest known beer fermenter in Europe was found in Bavaria, in the village of Kasendorf, some seven miles from the northern Bavarian city of Kulmbach. It’s some 2,800 years old. The oldest malting plant and brewhouse in the world, too, was unearthed in Bavaria. It dates from the year 179 AD. Almost half the world’s major beer styles are Bavarian in origin — including the blond Helles and Pils lagers; the amber Märzen and Oktoberfestbiers; the opaque Dunkel lagers; the yeast-turbid Weissbiers; the smoky Rauchbiers, and the strong Bockbiers, Doppelbocks, and Eisbocks.

In June 2001, the Council of Ministers of the European Union issued a favorable ruling on an application by the Bavarian Brewers Federation to accord the designation “Bavarian Beer” legal protection as a geographic appellation. The application was supported by both the Government of the State of Bavaria and the Federal Government of Germany, as well as the EU Commission. The EU ruling means that, henceforth, brews that are physically made in Bavaria and brewed in accordance with the Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516 may carry the official designation “Bavarian Beer” on the label. All other beers claiming to be “Bavarian” are now barred from using that designation.

Because all Bavarian breweries still adhere strictly to the traditional “Purity-Law” way of brewing, consumers all over the world can trust that a beer called out on the label as “Bavarian Beer” is a truly wholesome and healthy brew made only with natural ingredients. Bavarian Beer has always been and will continue to be made only from clean, pure water, top-quality, non-genetically modified malt, the best hops, and healthy brewers yeast. No chemical additives, no cheap substitutes, no genetically modified raw materials. That’s why we at the Bavarian Brewers Federation proudly proclaim: “Bavarian Beer — Unique in the World.”
