Germany is a country of 138 thousand square miles (roughly the size of Montana) with about 85 milion people (about one-quarter the population of the United States and Canada combined). It is located smack in the middle of Europe — bounded to the north by the North Sea, Denmark and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the west be the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxumbourg, and France; and to the south by the Alpine countries of Switzerland and Austria. Germany's cities offer splendid castles, churches, and monuments, ancient fortifications, lavish parks, museums for every interest, top cultural events, sophisticated international and indigenous cusines, and always great local beers fresh from the source. Many cities, inlcuding Bamberg, which calls itself the "secret beer capital of Germany," have been declared United Nations World Cultural Heritage Sites.
